Who Was Allamah Tabataba’i?

Allamah Sayyid Muhammad Husayn Tabataba’i (1903–1981) was one of the most influential Shi’a scholars, philosophers, and Qur’anic exegetes of the twentieth century.

Born in Tabriz, Iran, he devoted his life to the study and teaching of Islamic sciences, philosophy, and ethics, becoming best known for authoring Tafsir al-Mizan, one of the most widely respected contemporary commentaries on the Qur’an. He played a significant role in reviving the study of philosophy and intellectual inquiry within the Shi’a tradition.

He dedicated his life to scholarship, reflection, truth, and the education of others, leaving a lasting impact on Islamic thought and intellectual tradition.

Education with Purpose

For Allamah Tabataba’i, education was about far more than the acquisition of knowledge or academic success. In his philosophical and spiritual teachings, he emphasised that the highest purpose of learning is to guide the seeker towards truth, moral excellence, and a deeper understanding of their responsibilities to God and society. This perspective continues to shape ATA today. We encourage students not only to strive for outstanding academic achievement but also to cultivate integrity, humility, critical thinking, and a commitment to using their knowledge in the service of others.
